Diagnostic Techniques in The Amorim Lab

UV LIGHT FLUORESCENCE

Advanced UV light fluorescence analysis reveals hidden restorations, varnish layers, and surface repairs. This technique expertly highlights subtle differences in varnish composition and historical interventions, providing critical insight into the instrument’s authenticity and precise condition.

INFRARED (IR) SCANS

Precision IR scanning allows us to see beneath varnish layers, expertly exposing internal wood grain orientation, distinctive tool marks, and crucial construction details. It’s invaluable in identifying specific maker characteristics and verifying instrument authenticity.

INFRARED REFLECTION IMAGE

Using advanced IR reflection imaging, we accurately detect layered or concealed elements within the instrument’s surface, highlighting critical structural details or hidden repairs that might not be visible otherwise, ensuring comprehensive internal assessment.

X-RAY IMAGING

enables us to examine the instrument’s internal structure without interference, capturing precise wood density, historical repairs, and internal reinforcements. This technique provides a clear view of construction integrity and previously hidden details for thorough instrument evaluation.

DENDROCHRONOLOGY

By meticulously analyzing tree-ring patterns in the wood, the expert dendrochronologist precisely determines the age and origin of the instrument’s spruce top. This specialized analysis helps verify its exact period and geographic origin, significantly enhancing its historical context and authentication.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

We conduct rigorous in-depth comparisons with known reference instruments from similar master makers or periods. This involves meticulously studying design details, precise proportions, and unique craftsmanship features that definitively connect the instrument to a specific tradition or maker, ensuring accurate historical attribution.

When I first took this violin into my hands, my mind was blown away by the power, depth and richness of its sound! At the same time, the upper register of this violin has a very sweet and bright timbre. The combination of powerful and rich, yet sweet and singing made this violin my “perfect match.

Had a truly wonderful experience. Amorim Fine Violins is a great place to visit if you need to find a new instrument, to fix your own or to get any advices regarding string instruments. People working there are super kind, welcoming and professional. Highly recommended!

The customer is welcomed by extremely kind and helpful staff, ready to carefully assist him in his choice, providing a beautiful location in the heart of Cremona to try out the instruments in complete tranquillity. Sara Pastine, Violinist

When I met the Amorim family for the first time in Cremona I felt a big trust from the start. They helped me to find my top level instrument with patience and professionalism. I appreciate the close collaboration which I can only recommend especially for those who are in the middle of the process to find their own Instrument. I bought a wonderful violin by Matteo Goffriller in the Amorim Workshop in Cremona.

Julian Fahrner, Concertmaster

Anyone who enters the family-run studio will be treated to the ultimate Cremona experience. An atmospheric and busy violin workshop, a beautiful small hall with a vaulted ceiling to try out the wonderful instruments (old and new) and the most charming people who are dedicated to make you find the perfectly matching instrument. All this is not limited to the pure business, but may also be, as it was in my case, expanded to include large acts of kindness, which I won't reveal. One has to find out for oneself, it is definitely worth a visit.

I am very happy with my beautiful Testore, which I am currently playing in its modern state for quartet rehearsals and I am looking forward to playing it after the conversion as a baroque violin.
