Violin by Anqi Ni, Cremona, 2024
This violin, inspired by Giuseppe Ornati, was crafted by the hands of a skillful rising-star maker. It beautifully combines Anqi's contemporary vision with her Cremonese traditional handcraftsmanship. For us, its highlight is the superb sculpted scroll delineated by the black chamfers. More

Full description
"This personal model is based on and inspired by the great maestro of modern violinmaking of the 20th Century - Giuseppe Ornati. In my opinion, he represents a peak of the combination of personal artistry and the deeply rooted Cremonese classical influence. It is, thus, aesthetical experimentation of tradition lined up with modern limpidness. The spruce is from the forest of the Dolomiti Mountains in northeast Italy. It is known to be the same area where Stradivari and other grandmasters would go for resonance wood. The climate and altitude make them grow evenly and straight towards the sky, resulting in ideal resonant quality. I prefer spruce that is light and strong, with a particular sheen of light in its texture. The perfectly quarter-sawn two-piece back maple is from Bosnia. I appreciate the strong medullary rays that run across the grain. They are my guidelines when I work with the wood. The flames are intense but not too imposing. They leave some space like the void in a painting. The flames' distribution is also like landmarks telling me how to tune the plate. It might be that the violin is an extension of the memory of the tree from which it is made. And from the moment when it is being played, it carries on memories in the musical legacy. The lifespan of a human being is much shorter than a tree and a violin, so the violin is like the storyline being passed in the tribes from generation to generation, itself being the collective memory. A violin maker is who ventures to tell a story while adding some variant in each version (exactly like in the mythologies!)." Anqi Ni
