Violin by Alessandro di Matteo, Cremona 2010

Made in Cremona in 2010 by Alessandro di Matteo, this violin is modeled after Guarneri ‘Del Gesù’s’ late-period works, including the 1745 “Leduc.” The red-brown varnish over a golden ground is, in our opinion, its standout feature—deep, transparent, and luminous, it enhances the violin’s refined presence and subtle antiqued character. Full description

Crafted in Cremona in 2010 by Alessandro di Matteo, this violin draws inspiration from the bold and expressive style of Giuseppe Guarneri ‘Del Gesù’s’ late period, particularly models like the famed 1745 “Leduc.” It is a mature and elegant work that reflects the maker’s deep understanding of the Guarnerian aesthetic, paired with his own subtle artistic voice.

The instrument features a two-piece maple back of fine figure and a medium-grained Italian spruce top selected for its resonance and visual harmony. The red-brown varnish, softly antiqued over a golden ground, is applied with remarkable finesse. In our opinion, its most captivating feature is the varnish itself—luminous, transparent, and layered with depth, it brings a refined glow to the instrument and beautifully reveals the texture and flame of the wood beneath.

With its slightly worn accents and elegant patina, this violin embodies a quiet strength and confidence. Tonally, it delivers a rich and grounded voice, with clarity and responsiveness across all registers, making it a versatile partner for advanced and professional musicians seeking an instrument with personality and complexity.

    By Kurt Dolling  |

This great Modern German bow was made by the hands of a mastermaker. Amongst the greater names of the bow-making tradition in Markneukirchen, Kurt Dolling's bows are sought after for their reliability, precision, and functionality. From our point of view, this bow exceeds for its precisely shaped and curved strong octagonal stick.
