A Violin by José Catoira

Violin by José Catoira, Cremona 2024

2024

This stunning Guarneri "Del Gesù" inspired violin was crafted by master luthier José Catoira in 2024. Deeply dedicated to studying the early 1740s models, Catoira combined his meticulous craftsmanship with an artistic interpretation, resulting in an instrument of remarkable elegance. The highlight of this violin, in our opinion, is the exquisite antiqued golden-brown varnish, which beautifully enhances the flamed maple back and evokes the character and allure of historical masterpieces. Full description

This violin, crafted by José Catoira in Cremona in 2024, is a masterful homage to Guarneri "Del Gesù" models from the early 1740s. The top is carved from selected premium Italian spruce, carefully chosen to match the acoustic and stylistic details sought by the maker, while the back, sides, and scroll are made from beautifully flamed maple with deep natural hues. The varnish, a rich and nuanced golden-red-brown, accentuates the contours of the instrument and reflects Catoira's refined antiquing technique, evoking the timeworn elegance of historical masterpieces. Renowned for their bold and expressive tone, Catoira’s violins capture the essence of the Guarneri tradition with brilliant projection, warmth, and exceptional responsiveness.
