A Violin by Giuseppe Totis

Violin by Giuseppe Totis, San Vito al Tagliamento, 1937

This fine decorated violin was made by a great modern Italian maker. Its distinctive look brings the idea that the instrument was an attempt of the maker to show his highest skills and virtuosity. In our opinion, this violin highlight is the perfect and mild fluting channel following the well made double purfling all around the top and back. More

      Full description

This very fine decorated Italian violin illustrates the idea shared by Italian violin makers in the 1930's of rescuing aspects and standards of the great classic Italian tradition. Despite being a modern period instrument, it is clearly inspired in a mix of classic references, mostly in the aesthetic aspect by 16th and 17th century Brescian and Venetian instruments, and by cremonese influences in the selection of the form. Yet, the work style still very much influenced by the local tradition in the way of the modern venetian makers. The handcraftsmanship is classy, neat, and refined. And the virtuosity of the decoration details confirms that.

      Giuseppe Totis

Distinguished and unconventional, Giuseppe Totis was a modern Italian maker who clearly had a fine formal training, as it can be noticed on the quality of his craftsmanship, and also looked after the finest references of antique Italian violin making tradition, making his own work the combined interpretation of it all.
