Maker Background

Jean Joseph Martin was born in Mirecourt, France, where he most likely received his early training in bow making. In 1858 he moved to Paris to work in the renowned workshop of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume.
During the five years he spent in this prestigious atelier, Martin had the opportunity to study some of the finest bows ever made and worked alongside leading craftsmen such as François Nicolas Voirin, further refining his technique and artistic sensibility.

An eager and highly capable craftsman, Martin quickly distinguished himself in Vuillaume’s workshop. His bows made in the Vuillaume style soon ranked among the finest produced by the firm during that period.

In 1863, Martin returned to his hometown of Mirecourt and opened his own workshop. There he trained several capable bow makers, including Joseph Arthur Vigneron père, who would later become an important maker in his own right.

Martin produced a significant number of bows, many of them finely crafted from excellent quality pernambuco. His work is admired for its balance, reliability, and strong playing qualities, and his bows have been used by many professional musicians, including the celebrated violinist Isaac Stern.

In his later years, Martin actively supported the development of the bow-making trade in Mirecourt.

Today, Jean Joseph Martin is regarded as one of the most important Mirecourt bow makers of the late nineteenth century.
