A Violin by Giovannetti & Schultz

Copy of Joseph Guarneri “del Gesù” Dushkin, Zukerman 1742

2022

The hands of a rising star-maker crafted this Guarneri copy. The violin clearly combines his experience as a violin maker and musician with its impressive tone. For us, its high point is the scroll, based on the original but with some personal touches. The craquelure and patina are eye-catching. More

      Full description

"For this violin, I used spruce from Val di Fiemme with medium-tight, regular grain, and a two-piece back of Bosnian maple with deep, bright, and even flames. The oil-rosin varnish is brown-red on a golden-brown ground, emphasizing the toolmarks, old patina, and the deep and dispersed craquelé that characterizes this peculiar violin. I particularly enjoy making this violin because of its overall round appearance and flowing lines, and spontaneity in the making. I personally try to leave the fresh-cut under the wearing to emphasize the freehand work. The arching is relatively flat and full, especially in the C-bouts, a typical feature of many renowned violins by "del Gesù" in these years, like the "Lord Wilton" and the "Segelman," its twin brother. The back edge is very thick, and the fluting is deep and V-shaped; the f-holes are asymmetrical, swirling, and quickly cut; the corners are short and hooked. I adapted the scroll to my personal taste just a bit, always bearing in mind the peculiar big and round shape of "del Gesù" scrolls of the same years, like those of "il Cannone" and the "Carrodus."
