Full description
A contemporary cello by Sergio Scaramelli, made in Ferrara in 2019, this instrument is confident and highly authentic. Built on a personal model loosely inspired by Stradivarian principles, it departs from historical imitation in favor of a modern, sculptural language—most clearly expressed in the boldly rounded, powerful edges set against very narrow, finely fluted purfling, a hallmark of Scaramelli’s style.
The cello is finished in a refined orange-brown varnish of thin, delicate texture, allowing the materials to speak with clarity and depth. The top is crafted from dense, hard spruce with pronounced winter growth rings, lending structural strength and tonal focus, while the back, ribs, and scroll are made from strikingly flamed maple of slightly irregular pattern, chosen for both beauty and acoustic vitality.
Soundwise, the instrument is notable for its focused, direct projection—clear, centered, and immediate—making it particularly effective in larger spaces and modern performance contexts. Altogether, this cello exemplifies Scaramelli’s ability to merge classical discipline with a contemporary voice, resulting in an instrument of strong visual identity and compelling musical presence.

Sergio Scaramelli
Sergio Scaramelli is an Italian luthier based in Ferrara whose path to violin making began through his early training as a double-bass player. After qualifying with full marks at the Conservatory “Girolamo Frescobaldi” in Ferrara, he pursued a professional career as a musician and teacher while developing a strong interest in instrument restoration through close contact with the workshop of Gaetano Pareschi. This hands-on experience led him to build his first double bass and subsequently to open his own workshop, dedicating himself fully to violin making and restoration.
