Maker Background
Born in Germany, Emidio Pignotti discovered his passion for violin making in 1999 during a trip to Paris, where a chance encounter with a violin workshop left a lasting impression. Upon returning home—with no formal knowledge of the craft—he built his very first violin entirely self-taught, using wood repurposed from an old cherrywood table. At the same time, Pignotti began studying the violin privately under violinist Carlo Rea. This experience proved invaluable, giving him direct insight into the needs and challenges faced by players—knowledge that continues to guide his tonal setup process today.
His skills were further developed through time spent in the workshop of Cesare Castelli and his son Piero, whose advice helped refine his craft. Pignotti later deepened his expertise with guidance from several Cremonese violin makers, gradually perfecting his construction techniques.
Today, Emidio Pignotti lives and works in Castel di Lama, a small town in the province of Ascoli Piceno, where he runs his own violin-making workshop.
