Maker Background
Born in 1959 in Ferrara, Italy, Alessandro Ciciliati developed a deep passion for both the arts and music. He earned a Master’s diploma from the Academy of Arts in Ferrara and, in 1982, completed his double bass studies at the *G. Frescobaldi* Conservatory. His journey into violin making and restoration began in 1977, when he started training under renowned luthier Ivano Coratti, studying under his guidance for four years. From 1984 to 1994, Ciciliati took part in numerous national and international competitions, consistently earning recognition and awards for his craftsmanship. Deeply influenced by the Ferrarese school of violin making, he holds a strong connection to the work of Ettore Soffritti, whose models serve as a primary inspiration for his own instruments.
Beyond traditional craftsmanship, Ciciliati is committed to continuous research in acoustics, leading him to develop a method of instrument design that produces a powerful yet warm and well-projected sound. His meticulous approach extends to the selection of materials, using tonewoods aged for 15 to 20 years, and his exceptional attention to details such as scroll carving, purfling, and f-holes. His instruments, known for their expressive form and beautiful varnish, are highly sought after by worldwide musicians.
