Full description

This cello by Marco Maria Gastaldi, made in Cremona in 2017, is a refined personal interpretation of a Nicolò Amati model, embodying the elegance and harmonic balance of the classic Cremonese tradition. The instrument presents a graceful outline, with full yet controlled arching that reflects the classical Amati concept without excess height, allowing for both visual refinement and acoustic efficiency. The corners are delicately opened, and the edgework is finely executed, revealing the maker’s virtuosity and sensitivity to detail.

The back is crafted from two pieces of beautifully flamed maple, matched by the ribs and scroll, while the top is made from Italian spruce of medium to wide grain, carefully selected for its tonal qualities. The varnish, of light orange color over a golden ground, draws clear inspiration from the Cremonese tradition, enhanced by subtle antiquing and patina that lend depth and historical character to the instrument.

Tonally, the cello offers a deep and projecting voice, with a rich and elegant net of overtones and a continuous, singing resonance. Its response is immediate and generous, producing a wide range of colors with ease. Equally suited for solo performance, chamber music, or orchestral settings, it stands as a versatile and expressive instrument of modern Cremonese making.
