Salvatore Cantarella was born in Sicily in 1986 and later moved to Cremona to pursue his passion for violin making at the I.I.S. Antonio Stradivari. After earning his diploma in 2016, he continued refining his craft, drawing valuable insights from Cremona’s esteemed luthiers.Eager to expand his expertise, Cantarella honed his skills further in a renowned Roman workshop, where he gained hands-on experience in both violin making and instrument maintenance. This period allowed him to deepen his technical knowledge and master essential restoration techniques.
In 2019, he returned to his roots in Catania, Sicily, where he established his own workshop. Today, he meticulously handcrafts violins, violas, and cellos, blending traditional craftsmanship with his distinctive approach to both new and antiqued styles. His instruments reflect not only his technical mastery but also a deep appreciation for the artistry and legacy of Italian violin making.

Why did you start making instruments?
I started making instruments out of a necessity as I am a guitarrist and I wanted to create my own instrument. Only later did I get to know the art of violin making and I fell in love with it.
Why your instruments are so special?
I try to find the right balance between sound quality and instrument longevity, with the precision and care of real craftmanship.
What is your inspiration?
I find my inspiration in the models of Cremonese violin makers, from the golden age to the present day.
Where your instruments are currently being played?
Some of my instruments are being played in Italy, Japan, South Korea and U.S.A.
